Chrome's new tab page doesn't have much going on for it by default. A few commonly visited sites, shortcuts to your apps, and that's about it. You don't have to be stuck with it though, there are a lot of great Chrome apps and extensions that make each new tab page much more useful. Let's take a look at a few of them.

Turbulence. A minor bother for us, but a huge issue for enlisted seamen. So-called "ducts" in the lower atmosphere can wreak all sorts of maritime havoc; trapping radar and causing radio comms to travel further than expected and into the hands of the enemy. The Office of Naval Research's Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department (rad name, right?) isn't satisfied with using balloons to keep track of the ducts anymore, and is deploying drones instead, including Insitu's ScanEagle shown above. The result should be a greater understanding of how atmospheric conditions affect radar and communications, which could ultimately provide a tactical advantage -- at least while we wait on those 100-kilowatt lasers.

Στην Υδρα. Οι κάτοικοι της Υδρας το έβλεπαν αραγμένο μεσοπέλαγα, στο πίσω μέρος του νησιού, στον κόλπο του Αγίου Νικολάου. «Υπήρχε μια κινητικότητα, καθώς κατά διαστήματα ταχύπλοο σκάφος του έφερνε κόσμο στη στεριά. Επιβαίνοντες στο μεγάλο αυτό γιοτ έβγαιναν για βόλτα, φαγητό, καφέ ή ποτό στο λιμάνι εδώ. Και ντόπιοι ιδιοκτήτες θαλάσσιων ταξί έβλεπαν στην πίσω πλευρά της Υδρας αυτά τα πηγαινέλα τους. Φυσικά κανείς μας δεν γνώριζε την ταυτότητα αυτών των επισκεπτών, την πληροφορηθήκαμε εκ των υστέρων», περιγράφει στα «ΝΕΑ» η αντιδήμαρχος του νησιού Λουκία Λούλου. Στην Αθήνα. Την περασμένη Δευτέρα (29/7), το υπό σημαία Νήσων Καϊμάν «Venus» έδεσε στη Βουλιαγμένη, όπως μαρτυρούν και φωτογραφίες που κυκλοφόρησαν. Πληροφορίες αναφέρουν ότι η χήρα Τζομπς και τουλάχιστον η μία κόρη της θέλησαν και πήραν μια μικρή γεύση από Αθήνα. Το σχεδόν ογδοντάμετρο (78,2μ.) σε μήκος και δωδεκάμετρο σε πλάτος γιοτ άφηνε τον Πειραιά ύστερα από ένα 24ωρο παραμονής του.
Περνούσε νωρίς το μεσημέρι της Τρίτης τη Διώρυγα της Κορίνθου και ξανοιγόταν πλέον για Επτάνησα. Ενδιάμεσα, η θαλαμηγός κόστους άνω των 100 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων φωτογραφιζόταν με φόντο τη Γέφυρα Ρίου - Αντιρρίου, διασχίζοντας τον Πατραϊκό. Και χθες το μεσημέρι η τελευταία έως τότε γνωστή θέση πλεύσης της εστιαζόταν στο Ιόνιο. Η φήμη αυτή, ότι ένα τεράστιο σκάφος ίσως περνούσε από τα μέρη τους, είχε αρχίσει να διαδίδεται από νωρίς μεταξύ των ντόπιων στην Κεφαλονιά. «Αν δω το συγκεκριμένο γιοτ να φτάνει στα ανοιχτά, θα το αναγνωρίσω. Εχω διαβάσει το βιβλίο του Τζομπς, όπου έγραφε ότι είχε αρχίσει να το κατασκευάζει, οπότε το έχω αναζητήσει στο Διαδίκτυο.
Ως χρήστης κι εγώ του iPhone και του iMac, αλλά και ως ιδιοκτήτης δικού μου σκάφους, καταλαβαίνω αμέσως βλέποντας φωτογραφίες του ότι πρόκειται για γιοτ πολύ ασυνήθιστο - το ίδιο θα διαπιστώσει και όποιος έχει δουλέψει σε υπολογιστές Mac και Apple. Σχεδιαστικά, δηλαδή, ο Τζομπς άφησε σ' αυτό τη φιλοσοφία του: δεν έχει για παράδειγμα προεξοχές, όπως και το Mac. Εχει έντονο το γκρι χρώμα, σαν τα iMac-Apple. Με μια κουβέντα, ξεχωρίζει για το απόλυτα minimal στυλ του. Και στη γέφυρά του, όλα τα ηλεκτρονικά συστήματά του είναι iMac, τα πλέον εξελιγμένα», έλεγε από το Αργοστόλι ο Σταύρος Τραυλός, πρόεδρος των Μηχανικών ΤΕΕ σε Κεφαλονιά - Ιθάκη. Ρότα για Αδριατική. Τελικά λίγες ώρες αργότερα η περιπλάνηση του «Venus» συνεχίστηκε στα ανοιχτά της Κέρκυρας. Νωρίς το απόγευμα, έπαιρνε πλέον κατεύθυνση προς τα παράλια της Αδριατικής, στο λιμάνι Μπαρ του Μαυροβουνίου.

If you'll recall way back in September, Facebook started keeping track of every single time you compulsively searched for that one (or two, or three, or eight) special person you just can't get off your mind. But almost as quickly as Facebook search history emerged from the darkest recesses of hell to remind us all of how neurotic we really are, people were pretty much able to forget about it and go back to their excessive stalking.

Sure, the Terrafugia Transition took to the skies for the first time at the 2012 NY Auto Show, but it has yet to fly and drive in front of an audience -- until now. The "driveable plane" did two laps around the field at this year's EAA AirVenture airshow in Wisconsin, once up in the air and once on land, as you can see in the videos past the break. In between the laps, it transforms from an airborne into a land vehicle by automatically folding its wings flush against its body. Despite the successful demo, it'll take a while before we see a Transition on the road -- Terrafugia plans to build a third prototype of the $279,000 plane / car before it begins production. Millionaires and supervillains, take note: you can pay a $10,000 reserve fee for one, but don't expect it to grace your driveway or hangar until 2015 or 2016.
