BitTorrent Bleep: The P2P Plan to Make the World's Most Secure Chat
Last fall, BitTorrent (the company) announced and experimental plan to build a secure chat system using the protocol that's most famous for enabling file sharing. Today, we're getting our first look at the what will eventually become a finished product: BitTorrent Bleep.
BitTorrent Bleep launches today as an invite-only pre-alpha on Windows 7 and Windows 8, with other platforms set to launch soon. (Click here to get on the list for an invitation.) The idea is to create a secure chat service that's immune to government snooping and tribunal-mandated data requests. According to development documents, BitTorrent's decentralized infrastructure makes it ideal for just such a platform.
When you're using a traditional chat service like Google Hangouts or AIM, you're really just interfacing with an app on a central server. This server needs to know who you are and, as BitTorrent points out, stores metadata about your interactions. Even if a service offers end-to-end data encryption, your chats aren't really secure because if someone gains access to the central server, you're compromised.
Instead of using a central server as a conduit for messages and information, BitTorrent has built a decentralized engine that uses a public key to identify you (instead of a username). Then it establishes a direct connection between you and whoever you're talking to. Not only does that mean that nobody can eavesdrop on your conversation, it also means that there's no metadata about your interactions stored on central servers.
BitTorrent Bleep is still pre-alpha, so we'll be interested to learn more as additional technical details about thee service emerge. But in the mean time it's nice to see technology fighting back against the government's prying eyes. [BitTorrent]

The Pirate Bay Is Now Mobile-Optimized, If That's Something You Want
The Pirate Bay, the infamous peer-to-peer file sharing website, has provided only the finest in illegal torrents for more than a decade, but it's never been known for handsome mobile design. The torrent team has finally come up with a "mobile-friendly" version of its notorious website, in case you've ever wanted to torrent on the go.
Called The Mobile Bay, this new mobile-conscious design provides the same legally dubious amenities, just in a more appealing package. No longer do you have to zoom in just to read the normal Pirate Bay site jammed into your handset. The iconic pirate ship logo is still there, front and center, only now sections are optimized for touching instead of clicking.
"The normal version of the site renders like crap on mobile devices," The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak, and they won't hear any arguments from us. The Mobile Bay is the first major design change to the website in its 10-year existence.
However, when it comes to torrenting from your smartphone, not all devices are created equal. Blackberry and Android users can find lots of clients, but if you have an iPhone, you'll need to jailbreak it first to enjoy The Mobile Bay's torrent benefits.
In my few minutes spent navigating The Mobile Bay, I was pushed to a pop-up ad that redirected me to the app store to buy a game called Jelly Splash. I'm not sure if mobile torrenting is my thing. [TorrentFreak]

If you fold a paper in half 103 times it'll get as thick as the Universe
The myth: You can't fold a paper in half more than eight times.* The reality: Given a paper large enough—and enough energy—you can fold it as many times as you want. The problem: If you fold it 103 times, the thickness of your paper will be larger than the observable Universe: 93 billion light-years. Seriously.
How can a 0.0039-inch-thick paper get to be as thick as the Universe?
The answer is simple: Exponential growth. The average paper thickness in 1/10th of a millimeter (0.0039 inches.) If you perfectly fold the paper in half, you will double its thickness. Things get interesting quickly.
Folding the paper in half a third time will get you about the thickness of a nail.
Seven folds will be about the thickness of a notebook of 128 pages.
10 folds and the paper will be about the width of a hand.
23 folds will get you to one kilometer—3,280 feet.
30 folds will get you to space. Your paper will be now 100 kilometers high.
Keep folding it. 42 folds will get you to the Moon. With 51 you will burn in the Sun.
Now fast forward to 81 folds and your paper will be 127,786 light-years, almost as thick as the Andromeda Galaxy, estimated at 141,000 light-years across.
90 folds will make your paper 130.8 million light-years across, bigger than the Virgo Supercluster, estimated at 110 million light-years. The Virgo Supercluster contains the Local Galactic Group—with Andromeda and our own Milky Way—and about 100 other galaxy groups.
And finally, at 103 folds, you will get outside of the observable Universe, which is estimated at 93 billion light-years in diameters.
Math is wonderful, my friends. As much as the Universe itself.
And that's all I have to say.
* The current record is 12 times, done by Britney Gallivan. This her and her toilet paper after folding it in half for the 11th time.
