Minitel to be shut down tomorrow: France bids adieu to the internet's precursor

minitel-to-be-shut-down-in-france-tomorow

Back in the mid-80s, the idea of transferring funds, checking your email, buying stocks and booking a trip online was all a faraway dream. But if you happened to be in France at the time, you might've already been wired up and doing these things for years -- thanks to the state-subsidized Minitels that were in each and every household. The country was far more interconnected than any other and proud of the text-only terminals, even though government-owned France Telecom monopolized access and you had to be newspaper company to supply any content.

It took off anyway, and soon faux-newspaper companies sprung up everywhere for the not-so-secret purpose of delivering paid Minitel services. They supplied information, financial access, ticketing, online shopping, and even some naughty text-based services (sacré bleu!). At its apogee in 1998, the system generated over a billion dollars a year in revenue, and accounted for nearly 15% of the annual income for online retailers 3 Suisses and La Redoute, to name a couple.

But France can be an insular nation, and Minitel never really spread anywhere else. The internet gave the coup de grace to the system and displaced it, and though it's still accessed by millions each year, France Telecom will pull the plug once and for all this Saturday. Some regret that the nation didn't build on its technological lead, but most French folks will probably remember the boxes nostalgically, knowing that they beat the internet by almost 20 years.

Google Chrome for iOS goes straight to the top of the App Store charts

chrome itunes

While Chrome for iOS may not be much more than a skin on top of Mobile Safari, that doesn't seem to have put off the denizens of the App Store — they've sent Google's browser to the number 1 position in the free app charts. In our hands-on, we liked the Chrome mobile interface and appreciated the way it syncs with the desktop browser, though App Store restrictions stop it matching Mobile Safari for speed. It's definitely worth checking out, especially if you use the most popular browser in the world on other devices, and its instant popularity suggests that there could well be a demand for alternate iOS browsers.

Windows Phone Tango update rolling out to Lumia 800 and 710

Windows Phone Tango about

Nokia has started to rollout a Windows Phone 7.5 Refresh (Tango) update to its existing Lumia 800 and 710 handsets. The update introduces several new features, including Internet sharing and a flip-to-silence option. Lumia 800 and 710 users will also be able to download optional Camera Extras, Contact Share, and Play To apps after the latest Windows Phone update is applied.

Existing Lumia 900 and 610 handsets already have the latest Windows Phone updates and flip-to-silence, but 800 and 710 users can obtain the update from Zune on a PC or the Windows Phone Connector software on a mac. Google Drive SDK version 2 supports Android and iOS apps, common file tasks

Google Drive SDK version 2 supports Android and iOS apps, common file tasks

Virtually every corner of the Google universe is being touched at Google I/O, and that now includes Google Drive. A version 2 update to the Drive SDK gives Android and iOS developers the option of building the cloud storage into their mobile apps, whether it's downloads, uploads or on-the-spot edits. The programming interface has likewise been expanded as a whole to handle everyday file duties, such as conversions, copying and revision handling. Web-only users are taken care of with support for embedded shares and opening Google documents in any given software that will take the exportable formats. The updated Drive SDK is ready to go, with a flood of apps either coming or already here -- if you want to hop on the bandwagon, just take a peek at the source link.

Made in the USA: Google's Nexus Q is symbolic and significant

Google Nexus Q made in USA

Buried somewhat quietly in the noise of Google's spate of announcements today was an interesting fact: the Nexus Q, Google's new media streamer and first self-built consumer hardware, is being manufactured in the United States. In fact, Google didn’t talk about it on stage at all, but had stories in The New York Times and Wired timed with the announcement of the product. Google isn't providing many details about the manufacture of the devices, which isn't surprising, but we do know they're being made in San Jose, California. The price for a "made in the USA" streamer? $300.

Though electronics manufacturing has been somewhat a hot topic since most of the jobs went overseas, the concern hit a high point recently following serious...

Google announces tablet version of Google+ for Android today, iPad "soon"

i/O

Google has just announced Google+ for tablets on stage at I/O. The app is available for Android today, and Google says the iOS version will be available "soon." Google says that more users engage with Google+ on mobile than desktops, and a tablet version of it has been sorely missing. The app itself, from what we can tell, looks very slick, with photos front and center to the content, very large in the streams, organizing content based on popularity.

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean [Screenshot Tour]

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanGoogle announced the next version of Android, named Jelly Bean, today. It has a ton of improvements in notifications, speed and smoothness, and a new feature called Google Now that gives you useful real-time information based on where you are and what's coming up in your calendar.

Google Now Updates You With Useful Information in Real Time

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanArguably the coolest feature in Android 4.1 is a feature called "Google Now", that always keeps you up to date on what's important in your life. Say you have an event coming up in your calendar. It will figure out your usual travel method, calculate the time it will take you to get to your event using that travel method, and notify you when you need to leave (with a quick shortcut to navigate you there). If you're using public transit, it'll even factor in the time it'll take to get you to the bus stop.

It can also show you places of interest as you walk down the street, like restaurants and bars, and even tell you what the famous menu items are at those places. It'll keep you updated on the status of upcoming flights, sports scores, currency conversions if it recognizes you traveling internationally, and a lot more. It gets smarter the more you use it, too, which is awesome.

Knowledge Graph Brings Smarter Search Results

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanGoogle has also added its intelligent Knowledge Graph searching to mobile search, in a very cool way. If you search for a person, place, or thing that Google understands, it'll show you a card with information pertaining to that specific thing. If you search for the weather, it'll show you a screen with lots of weather information rather than just giving you a list of search results. Of course, you can swipe down to bypass the card and get your regular search results if you so choose.

If you perform the search with your voice, then it will speak the resulting Knowledge Graph answer back to you as it shows you the card. The voice recognition has been sped up and is now better at understanding natural language. The voice lady's voice is also lovely and surprisingly non-robotic.

Notifications Are Expandable and More Detailed

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanNotifications in Jelly Bean are now expandable, so you can get more information about a specific notification and even take action right from the notification drawer. For example, if you have a missed call, you'll see a contact image, their number, and a button to call them back. You can also see the body of a Gmail message and reply to it, upcoming calendar events with a button to email all other attendants, and you can even like or reply to comments on social networks like FourSquare (and, presumably, Facebook and Twitter). If someone shares a photo on Google+, you'll see a full res version of the photo, and you can +1 or share it with one tap.

By default, the drawer expands the top notification in the list, and as you swipe the top notification away, the next one in the list will flat up and automatically expand. If you want to expand other notifications in the drawer, you can do so with a two-finger swipe.

"Project Butter" Adds Speed and Smoothness to Android's UI

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanGoogle has taken more steps to improve Android's sometimes-laggy UI with something they call "Project Butter": an initiative to improve speed and smoothness. This is something Ice Cream Sandwich aspired to do as well, but instead of practical UI tweaks, it looks like Jelly Bean contains more under-the-hood improvements (which is what Android really needed). The most interesting of these under the hood tweaks is the touch responsiveness improvement, which ramps up the CPU as soon as you touch the screen so it can react quickly to whatever you're about to do.

Voice Actions Are Now Available Offline

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanSpeaking of voice control, Google has also shrunk the size of voice recognition so that the entire thing is offline. That means if you want to send a text message or type using your voice, you can do so right from the keyboard, no internet connection necessary.

The New Camera Has More Gesutres

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanThe Camera has gotten a few new cool gestures. When in camera view, you can swipe to the left to view your camera roll, and swipe through your photo library right from there. If you want a wider view, you can pinch in to view a filmstrip of your photos, and swipe up to delete any of your photos, just like you can do in the browser or multitasking screens introduced in Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Home Screen Automatically Resizes Widgets to Fit

What's New in Android 4.1 Jelly BeanLastly, the home screen has a very cool new feature in which it automatically rearranges your screen when you drop in widgets. Say you want to move a widget to another screen, but there isn't enough room for that widget. It'll automatically rearrange your icons and resize the widget so it fits perfectly, which is pretty awesome.

These aren't the only new things in Jelly Bean, but they are the coolest. It also includes new Android Beam features (like the ability to pair your phone with Bluetooth speakers just by tapping them together), new input languages, accessibility features for blind users, and more. Jelly Bean will be available to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom in mid-July, with other phones following behind. Got a new feature that you think looks awesome, or something you wish they would have added? Talk about it in the comments.

Jelly Bean, Android 4.1 revealed by Google

It's seems like only yesterday we were all crowded around our laptops, watching a live stream and getting amped for Ice Cream Sandwich. Truth is, that was six months ago now and, while most of the Android running public still hasn't been blessed with 4.0, it's already time to make the leap to 4.1. Today Google officially took the wraps off Jelly Bean, the next evolution of its mobile platform and while its not quite the revolutionary shift that was Gingerbread to ICS, it still marks an important improvement for the ecosystem. One of the biggest features is Project Butter, a deep diving effort to improve performance and response time. The whole system hums along at 60fps now, and while the difference of a few miliseconds might sound like small potatoes, it becomes glaringly apparently the moment you run Jelly Bean next to an ICS device. Animations are smoother and quicker. The CPU immediately ramps up the moment a touch is detected to ensure speedy response.

YouTube for PS Vita now ready, will help you watch more kitties than Killzone

YouTube for PS Vita goes live, will help you watch games more than play them

Sony promised us a YouTube app for the PlayStation Vita this month, and although it's just sliding under the wire, that app is here. The viewer as it hits the console will play videos over 3G and WiFi as well as in HD quality, if you've got the bandwidth to burn. Most of the basics for favorites and searches are covered, including a small player that will let you hop between clips. There's no mention of subscriptions for those perpetually addicted to Maru or Ray William Johnson, however. That quirk aside, the free app is due to swing by the PlayStation Store any moment now, so fire up your Vita and get ready to watch game strategy videos distracting pet clips on that OLED-packing handheld.
