iPhone 6 Plus Teardown: Twice as Big a Battery as iPhone 5s [Update: 1 GB RAM Confirmed]

iFixIt is in the process of taking apart the new iPhone 6 Plus, currently on sale in Australia. Surprisingly, the team points out that the internal layout of the device is extremely similar to that of the iPhone 5s, except at a larger scale and with a bigger battery. The teardown's findings reveal the battery capacity of the device and some internal reorganization.

ifixitiphone6plusteardown
In removing the front panel from the rest of the device, the iFixIt team notes that there are "no noticeable booby traps", referring to the iPhone 5s' cable that ran from the Touch ID sensor to the Lightning port. The battery in the device is listed at 2915mAh at 3.82 volts, in line with the previously leaked battery prototype for the device and giving the 6 Plus double the battery capacity of the iPhone 5s' 1560mAh and much larger than the iPhone 6's 1810mAh battery.

The teardown also revealed that the vibrator is now located under the logic board and to the right of the battery.

iFixIt's teardown is still in progress and this post will be updated if anything significant is revealed.

Update: iFixIt has exposed Apple's new A8 processor in their teardown, which reveals the F8164A3PM inscribed on the chip. The second digit in that sequence, 8, corresponds to 8 Gigabits (1 GB) of RAM in Micron's catalog.

Photos From Inside a 747 Flying iPhone 6 Units to the U.S.

As retailers prepare to begin sending out iPhone 6 and 6 Plus pre-orders to customers, shipping company employees behind the scenes are working hard to transport the phones from China to the United States. One MacRumors reader who works in shipping has posted photos of 195,000 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus pre-orders that he flew from China to Alaska in a 747, which will then be sent on to Chicago.

Yep, that's what I do. I fly stuff. Privileged to be a small part of the Apple supply chain. Just landed a 747 full of iPhone 6's in Anchorage. Another crew will take the airplane on to Chicago. It'll be on the ground at O'hare about 9am Sept. 15. I gave it a little extra gas coming over the Pacific, just to get them here a little quicker. You're welcome
According to the poster, goforblacksky, the massive load of phones weighed approximately 256,000 pounds. Though the photo shows the cargo under tarps and concealed, a second shipping photo from China Daily depicts a similar plane loaded with iPhones departing from the Henan province in China bound for Chicago last week.

Customers who pre-ordered early from carriers like Verizon have already begun receiving shipping notifications, and customers who placed orders from Apple and were lucky enough to receive a 9/19 shipping date are seeing their phone statuses listed as "Preparing for shipment." Apple orders may begin shipping out later today.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus orders will begin arriving to customers on Friday, 9/19, which is the date that the iPhone will also begin appearing in stores. Apple will have additional iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units available for customers willing to wait in line and purchase in store on that date.

Currently, all pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have sold out. iPhone 6 orders placed on Apple's online store now have shipping estimates of 7 to 10 days, while iPhone 6 Plus orders have shipping estimates of three to four weeks.

iPhone 6 Guts: A Screaming Processor and a Better Camera Than Ever

iPhone 6 Guts: A Screaming Processor and a Better Camera Than Ever

The new generation of iPhones isn't only increasing in size but speed as well. Apple just announced its next-generation A8 processor that will be baked into the iPhone 6 and most likely future iPad Airs. Apple confirms rumors that the A8 has over 1 billion transistors and is 13 percent smaller, 25 percent faster, and 50 percent more efficient than its A7 predecessor.

Apple is also introducing a new generation of M8 chip can tell when you're cycling, walking, running and can measure distance and elevation even if you go up a flight of stairs. The A8 does inherit some traits from the A7, primarily its dual-core and 64-bit architecture characteristics, however it's manufactured with the 20nm process rather than the A7's 28nm process.

From a straight spec comparison between chips, such as the Snapdragon 805 found in Samsung's new Galaxy Note 4, the A8 may not seem like a big deal. The 805 is quad-core 2.7GHz SoC, but it's important to remember that the A8 is a custom job, built and optimized specifically for Apple products and iOS, whereas Qualcomm creates stock chips for multiple smartphones. A pure spec sheet comparison doesn't come close to telling the whole story.

After upgrading the iPhones brains and brawn, all that's left is its vision. Because Apple slimmed down their devices (.22 inches!), they've also had to tinker with the camera module to make it fit, and even then, it still protrudes slightly on the back. The lens remains the same with just 8 megapixels but is an iSight camera with a new FocusPixels technology, true tone flash, and a f/2.2 aperture. FocusPixels helps the camera focus twice as fast and comes with next-gen tone mapping and noise reduction. The improved image signal sensor in the A8 makes advanced face detection possible, which means better focus.

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus will each have digital image stabilization. However, the Apple's phablet offering will also include optical image stabilization, which will help capture steady video and better pictures in low light. Concerning video, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus can take 1080p video at 30fp or 60fps. If you want to dial the speed down with the iPhone's slo-mo function, those frame rates jump up to 120 fps or 240 fps.

All the forthcoming Apple ads (and believe me, they're coming) will obviously, and maybe justly, focus on the iPhone 6's new slim exterior, but Apple isn't just about cosmetics. It's the marriage of design, software, and the impressive guts inside that holds the world's attention every September.

iPhone 6 Plus with 5.5-inch display announced

via The Verge - All Posts http://ift.tt/oZfQdV

Apple unveils the 4.7-inch iPhone 6

You were expecting it, and here it is: Apple has unveiled the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. As the leaks suggested, it centers around a 1,334 x 750 Retina Display HD and is decidedly slimmer (not to mention curvier) than its already svelte 5s predecessor, at...

iPhone 6 Plus: Everything You Need to Know About Apple's Jumbo Phone

The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is Apple's biggest phone to date, and the second new, bigger phone the company is introducing today. Here's what you need to know about Apple's massive smartphone future.

Apple's original iPhone was a groundbreaking product that virtually didn't have competitors, but today, it's hardly alone in a sea of quality handsets. While other manufacturers have experimented with larger phones—or even tablet-sized phones—Apple's remained small, almost stubbornly so. The iPhone 5/5s featured only a 4-inch screen, which today is small considering even the smallest flagships hit 4.7 inches and most are up over 5. The new 5.5-inch phone is an admission that some people might benefit from a little more real estate.

iPhone 6 Plus: Everything You Need to Know About Apple's Jumbo Phone

Indeed, what we've got is a hot Apple phone, the most innovative in years, that breaks many of the company's most entrenched conventions.

Design

While the iPhone 6L is noticeably larger than its predecessors, the design is a subtle evolution of the sleek, minimalist look Apple's been tweaking for years. Whereas the iPhone 5/5S opted for a a flat sides, the iPhone 6L has a more rounded design, with the pill-shaped volume buttons introduced on the iPad Air last year.

The phone has a 1920 x 1080 display, which as Phil Schiller points out has 138 percent more pixels than the iPhone 5S. With the new large phone Apple is taking advantage of the the real-estate in apps with new split-screen modes in both apps and on the home screen. The home screen view in particular is very striking because we're so used to that stubbornly vertical view of all of the generations that preceded it.

iPhone 6: A Little Bit Bigger, A Whole Lot Better

iPhone 6: A Little Bit Bigger, A Whole Lot Better

This is it. Apple just announced the iPhone 6, a sleek sliver of aluminum that comes in two sizes. The screen on the smaller of the two measures 4.7-inches diagonally, and depending on the nature of your needs (and the size of your hands) it might just be the perfect phone for you.

Design

The iPhone 6 is pretty. The device sheds the boxy profile of its predecessor in favor of rounded edges. It's also significantly thinner than any other iPhone—6.9mm thick for the model with the 4.7"-inch screen! The iPhone 5's combination of anodized aluminum and glass panels has been replaced with an all anodized aluminum case with ion-strengthened glass that curves around the front. The overall effect brings the iPhone 6 design in line with that of the iPad Air and iPad Mini. Like the iPad, the new iPhone also features an embedded Apple logo in the back case. It is pretty no matter which way you look at it.

iPhone 6: A Little Bit Bigger, A Whole Lot Better

Screen

The new iPhone lineup also features a new generation of displays that Apple's calling Retina HD. That means 38-percent more pixels are being packed into the 4.7-inch screen. Bigger screen and more pixels means the picture is sure to be beautiful. Other upgrades include an improved polarizer and an ultrathin backlight.

iPhone 6: A Little Bit Bigger, A Whole Lot Better

Guts

As expected, the brand new iPhone also comes with a brand new A8 chip. The company claims that it's 50 percent faster than the A7 chip.

Multiple Rumors Hint at U2's Possible Involvement in iPhone 6 Launch

Several rumors circulating today have suggested that Apple might be planning to somehow involve U2 in the upcoming launch of the iPhone 6. A tipster told MacRumors that the iPhone 6 will come preloaded with the new U2 album, and there's also been some unverified chatter on Twitter from reporters in Ireland pointing towards that possibility.

Most of the rumors seem to come from a recent video shoot U2 did in Dublin, which was conducted in secrecy with "black sheets strategically placed to obscure what was happening from public view." Music promoter Stephen Browne managed to snap a blurry photo of the shoot, and he says the "focus of the 'video' on the bridge last week was a phone." It is impossible to tell what device is depicted in the photo, however, or if the shoot revolved around the iPhone.

— Stephen Browne (@Stephenbrow) September 3, 2014

A U2 fan site pointed out by a Reddit user may also be a source of the rumors, as Julian Lennon, son of late Beatles frontman John Lennon and friend to U2, reportedly told the site "I think they are shooting an Apple commercial."

According to CNET's Shara Tibken, it's also possible that Bono might be a "special musical guest" at Apple's upcoming iPhone 6 event on September 9. The event will be held at the Flint Center at De Anza College in Cupertino, and Apple is in the midst of constructing a massive structure on site.

Adding to iPhone 6 U2 rumors, I hear Bono may be special musical guest on 9-9-14. #iPhone6

— Shara Tibken (@sharatibken) September 3, 2014

It is unknown what the structure is, but some have suggested it could be a stage. San Jose Mercury News interviewed a Cupertino resident who had been observing the ongoing construction and said "It looked like a sound stage going up for a rock concert behind Flint Center."

Apple and U2 have had a long partnership, as Steve Jobs and Bono were good friends. Starting in 2004, Apple released several special edition U2 iPods, which included the band's signatures and U2's music. Apple has also been a longtime partner of (Product) RED, a charity founded by Bono.

It is unknown if these whispers and hints of a U2 iPhone 6 tie-in and possible performance are accurate, but it appears to be a possibility given all of the circumstantial evidence. Apple has plans to debut its iPhone 6 on September 9, which is, coincidentally, the same day that the first single for U2's newest album is rumored to debut.
