Maybe you want to get a tweet when your laundry's done, or get an email when the basement floods while you're on vacation. Even if you're good with electronics and programming, these are involved projects. Instead of worrying about wiring or networking code, you can focus on your idea.

Twine is the simplest possible way to get the objects in your life texting, tweeting or emailing. A durable 2.5″ square provides WiFi connectivity, internal and external sensors, and two AAA batteries that keep it running for months. A simple web app allows to you quickly set up your Twine with human-friendly rules — no programming needed. And if you're more adventurous, you can connect your own sensors and use HTTP to have Twine send data to your own app.

Είναι μια φανταστική ιδέα, γι' αυτό προφανώς έχει μαζέψει τέσσερις φορές περισσότερα λεφτά απ' όσα έψαχνε στο Kickstarer.

Apple iPad 2 press

Microsoft's released a few apps here and there for the iPhone and iPad but has kept one of its prize breadwinners out of the iOS fray. According to The Daily, that all might change in 2012 with the launch of Office for iPad. The publication claims that this new release will play nice with Office 365's cloud-based service, and iPad documents should be compatible with the desktop versions of Office. In fact, this closely mirrors both Office for Windows Phone and iWork on the iPad, with document syncing and compatibility between mobile and desktop apps. Office for iPad's price point also is rumored to be similar to iWork on iOS's $10 per app pricing. The Daily claims a new Office for Mac will be coming out closer to the end of 2012, but...

Lenovo Family

Lenovo is launching the LePad S2005, S2007 and S2010 tablets in Beijing this morning, following on from the K1. The range is likely to be known as the IdeaTab outside of China, but it looks like the model numbers will remain the same. All three devices ship with the W-CDMA bands needed for China's Unicom network.

The 5-inch S2005 occupies the same confusing is-it-a-phone-or-a-tablet space as Dell's Streak 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Note. It runs a skinned version of Android 2.3.5 on an 800 x 480 LTPS display (which touts an impressive 178-degree viewing angle), with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and 1GB of RAM. The storage is expandable, but there's no word on how much is included. The device also packs a pair of cameras, with a...

EOS 1000D Underwater 1000

It's hard not to be a little jaded the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when all that gratitude has been expressed and the deep, deep regret about how much you ate has set in. Fortunately, while your immediate family has once again disappointed you with their politics and green bean casserole, your larger, human family can restore your faith in people's basic goodness with the magic of social networking. Enter Google+ and Markus Thompson, who was scuba diving in Deep Bay (outside of Vancouver) and discovered a Canon EOS 1000D camera. Thompson pulled the SD card to discover not only that he could recover the images, but that they revealed the camera had been sitting in the salty brine for over a year.

New technology that channels light in the same way that diodes direct electrons could be the future of optical computing. While optical systems are much faster than their electronic counterparts, they are generally limited by higher costs and the need for additional equipment to control interference. These so-called isolators add to the complexity of the design, but an MIT team has figured out a way to achieve the same noise-reducing effect more simply.

Diodes form a critical part of any circuitry since they allow electrons to pass only in one direction, which creates the potential for logic gates. Without the isolators, reflections of the laser (or LED) inside the chip can cause interference and corruption. MIT's solution to this...

iPad 3: Super-High-Res Displays a Go, But Yields Will Be Low

It's the most definitive assurance yet that Apple's next iPad will include a screen with a near "retina display"-quality resolution: DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim has told CNET that "production has started" for 2048x1536, 10-inch-class tablet screens, and three manufacturers -- Samsung, Sharp and LGD -- are supplying parts to Apple.

Seagate CEO speaks about Thailand floods and resulting hard drive shortages

Seagate Hard Drive

Although Seagate's factories weren't directly impacted by the huge flooding in Thailand, the company has been affected by the inventory shortages of components crucial to its supply chain. All Things D recently interviewed Seagate CEO Steve Luczo, who assessed the road that lies ahead for the industry: supply shortages will continue until at least late 2012, and the industry may not return to normal until the end of 2013. And while manufacturers are adapting to the shortage by including fewer parts in their drives by using a single higher-density disk with two heads instead of two disks with four heads, Luczo says price increases are inevitable. Although Seagate doesn't plan to build factories outside of the flood zone because it...

Using state-of-the-art algorithms developed at the Laboratory for Web Algorithmics of the Università degli Studi di Milano, we were able to approximate the number of hops between all pairs of individuals on Facebook. We found that six degrees actually overstates the number of links between typical pairs of users: While 99.6% of all pairs of users are connected by paths with 5 degrees (6 hops), 92% are connected by only four degrees (5 hops). And as Facebook has grown over the years, representing an ever larger fraction of the global population, it has become steadily more connected. The average distance in 2008 was 5.28 hops, while now it is 4.74.

Rabbit Contact Lens Display

We're getting closer to a world in which a heads-up display could be built right into your contact lenses. A team of researchers from the University of Washington and Aalto University of Finland have just published the results of a study in which they successfully tested a contact lens with a single pixel display built in on live rabbits. The contact lens itself included an antenna, a 500 x 500 µm2 piece of silicon, and a 750 x 750 µm2 single-pixel display that receives signals wirelessly through the antenna from a distance of up to one meter when the contact was not placed on the test rabbit's eye. However, once placed on the eye, the lens was only able to receive a signal from two centimeters away. As for the rabbits, they showed no...

Microsoft says Windows 8 setup can be completed in as few as eleven clicks

Windows 8 setup

Windows users have long had to deal with cumbersome upgrade and setup processes — if you even mention Windows Millennium Edition we're prone to relive some profound nightmares — but Microsoft is working hard on improving that experience with Windows 8. In a new blog post, the Windows engineering team details the streamlined setup in Windows 8: what took four wizards and up to 60 screens in a Windows 7 upgrade can now be accomplished in a consolidated experience that requires as few as eleven clicks, and users can now download the OS from the web during installation. Performance in upgrade speed has also been remarkably improved: Microsoft explains that a "super upgrade" with 1.44 million files and 120 apps took 513 minutes to...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus review

Sent to you by gean via Google Reader:

via Engadget by Tim Stevens on 11/21/11

We've already established that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great tablet. Then, just recently, we summarily found that the 1.2-inch smaller Galaxy Tab 8.9 is an even better tablet -- at least for anyone who wants to take their slate places. So, following that logic, the even more petite Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus should be the best of the three, right?

Not so fast. We've been here before, and things weren't exactly great. The original Galaxy Tab was, of course, a 7-incher and wasn't universally well received thanks to a number of problems -- the first being a $600 MSRP. Another issue was an Android 2.2 build that tried its best but was ultimately ill-suited for tablet duties. This new 7-inch installment packs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a tablet-friendlier build of Android 3.2 Honeycomb and a somewhat more palatable $400 price tag.

So, it's clearly better equipped than its predecessor, but that one shipped a whopping 12 months ago. How does the newer, fancier Tab compete in this newer, fancier present? Read on to find out.

Nokia to release Windows 8 tablets this June, top drawer Lumia in the works?

via Engadget by Amar Toor on 11/15/11

There's some intriguing Nokia news coming out of France this morning, thanks to Paul Amsellem, head of the company's Gallic outpost. In a recent interview with Parisian daily Les Echos, Amsellem described Nokia's aspirations to regain some of the market share it's lost within France, explaining that his firm is squarely targeting the 60 percent of French users who currently don't own a smartphone. More salient, however, is what the exec had to say about Nokia's plans for future releases. According to Amsellem, Espoo will unveil a new Windows 8 equipped tablet by June 2012. Unfortunately, that's about all he had to say on the subject, but it's certainly enough of a carrot to raise our heart rates -- as are Amsellem's comments on the Lumia 800, which hit French stores yesterday. Comparing the handset to a BMW 5 series, the chief went on to say that Nokia "will soon have a full range with a 7 Series and 3 Series." He didn't elaborate much on this analogy, though its implication is rather self-evident -- new Lumia cousins may be in the works. Of course, it remains to be seen when and if the company will expand upon its Lumia line, though we'll definitely be keeping our yeux on it.

The multiple Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie was embroiled in a conflict with Facebook over his real name yesterday. The social network deactivated his account and requested that he prove his identity, only to reinstate it under the wrong name. Even though he has always used his middle name, Facebook demanded the account be under Ahmed Rushdie, in accordance with his passport. The story has a happy and ironic ending in that the problem was fixed when Rushdie went to Twitter to seek help. Within two hours of his followers kicking up a storm, Facebook had reinstated the original name and issued an official apology.

While Rushdie has certainly been in more controversial situations than this (unless in today's world losing a...

via Engadget by Chris Barylick on 11/15/11

It may be a bit on the Uncanny Valley side of things to have a computer chip that can mimic the human brain's activity, but it's still undeniably cool. Over at MIT, researchers have unveiled a chip that mimics how the brain's neurons adapt to new information (a process known as plasticity) which could help in understanding assorted brain functions, including learning and memory. The silicon chip contains about 400 transistors and can simulate the activity of a single brain synapse -- the space between two neurons that allows information to flow from one to the other. Researchers anticipate this chip will help neuroscientists learn much more about how the brain works, and could also be used in neural prosthetic devices such as artificial retinas. Moving into the realm of "super cool things we could do with the chip," MIT's researchers have outlined plans to model specific neural functions, such as the visual processing system. Such systems could be much faster than digital computers and where it might take hours or days to simulate a simple brain circuit, the chip -- which functions on an analog method -- could be even faster than the biological system itself. In other news, the chip will gladly handle next week's grocery run, since it knows which foods are better for you than you ever could.

Microsoft bringing Windows 'down to the phone' with Windows 8

Steve Ballmer

There's been plenty of speculation, but Steve Ballmer just dropped the quasi-bombshell at a shareholder meeting: "We've got broad initiatives driving Windows down to the phone with Windows 8." The choice of words is incredibly (if unintentionally) telling, but also a little vague. Like with tablets, Microsoft would rather cram a desktop OS "down" into mobile form, than build off of a simple mobile platform into something more complex. Of course, that's the least favorable interpretation, and Ballmer obviously didn't expound on these future plans, since there are plenty of Windows Phone 7.5 phones to be sold.

Since Windows 8 is already heavily indebted to Windows Phone, at least when it comes to looks and UI concepts, it's unclear if...

Intel celebrates 40 years of processor production

via farm4.static.flickr.com

Intel is marking 40 years since the launch of its first microprocessor, which was revealed on 15 November 1971, just over three years after the company was created. The 4004 was originally designed for use in a calculator, reducing the number of chips needed from twelve to four, before being marketed to a wider audience via an advert in Electronic News magazine. The chip was a long way from the world of Core 2 Duos and i7s  — a 4-bit processor clocked at 740kHz, with 46 possible instructions — but it introduced the Processor, RAM, and ROM setup that we still use today. Even the production method of the chips seems antiquated now, with individual sheets of film being physically cut and printed before being sandwiched together, in...
