Apple's having some issues with iMessage, again — for the second time in the last week, users are experiencing difficulties sending and receiving messages on both iOS devices and Macs running OS X. Symptoms appear very similar to the last outage, with messages hanging and failing (or being pushed through as text messages, on iOS). A number of staff members in Boston, New York City, San Francisco, and other locations have all experienced this problem, and a quick Twitter search shows that many other users are having similar problems. Furthermore, Apple's own iCloud status site indicates that iMessage is not functioning for "some" users. We're reaching out to Apple to see if it has any information on the issue — in the meantime, let us...
Disney is already one of the biggest media companies around, and it's now set to become even bigger. The company announced late today that it's acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd., currently 100 percent owned by founder George Lucas, for $4.05 billion in a cash and stock deal. That of course includes the rights to both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises, as well as Lucasfilm properties like Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. What's more, the press release announcing the deal also confirmed that Disney is now targeting 2015 for a release of Star Wars: Episode 7, and that its "long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years." No word yet on a proper release of the original, original trilogy.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. […]
Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
Exciting news. But it’s hard to imagine a Star Wars film opening without the 20th Century Fox fanfare.
To be fair, those challenges are less apparent in the multiplayer modes than in the single player campaign. The first thing you'll notice when you load up Warfighter's multiplayer is how busy the user interface is. EA clearly wants Warfighter to become a social hub through integration with the Battlelog website. Users can earn “country tokens” that can be redeemed on Battlelog for bonus experience points, or form Platoons (read: Clans). Most of the UI is dedicated to these social tools rather than menus to get into matches.
The main building block of Warfighter's multiplayer is the Fire Team, or two-man squad. If your buddy's not in danger you can respawn right near him instead of at the default respawn location. Fire Team buddies can heal and re-supply each other, and earn experience points by killing enemies that are about to kill their buddy. Fire Team buddies can also see each others' outlines through walls to keep track of their position. If you earn enough points during a match you can call in support actions like mortar barrages or Blackhawk helicopters to spawn on.

Images from the International Space Station are usually breathtaking, and photographer Christoph Malin has made use of them to create a truly stunning timelapse of the station's view as it travels around our planet. The video was created by "stacking" sequences of images from the ISS, creating amazing cloud patterns and turning star movement into art. The disorganized white splatters are lightning strikes, and if you look closely, you can see tracks from meteors and satellites that don't line up with the movement of the stars.
Apple has formally announced a media event for next Tuesday, October 23, and it may very well be about the iPad mini. The invitation, sent to select members of the media, shows a vague image of an Apple logo and reads, "We've got a little more to show you."
It has long been rumored that Apple would introduce a 7.85-inch version of the iPad this year before the holiday season, even though the company's release cycle for the iPad typically happens in the springtime. Unsurprisingly, Apple has not commented publicly on the iPad mini, but the rumor mill has pointed to it not having a "retina" class display like the current version of the (full-sized) iPad. There are also rumors that Apple may introduce updated Macs during the event.
This is not the first time Apple has held a media event in October, only a month after holding its annual fall music (and now iPhone) event in September. The company has held a second fall event several times in the past, though the last one was in 2008 when the company introduced new notebooks.
